Aari work blouse designs, from simple to bridal

Popular aari design styles

Simple aari work

A light outline on the neckline and sleeve borders. Good for office wear, pujas and silk sarees with busy borders.

Back neck designs

A worked panel or motif on the back neck, often with a dori and latkans. Most of the impact for moderate work.

Sleeve designs

Bands or butta motifs on elbow sleeves that echo the saree border.

Peacock and temple motifs

Classic South Indian motifs that suit pattu and Kanjeevaram sarees.

Bridal aari work

Fully worked back and sleeves with zardosi, kundan, beads and stones.

Net and sheer aari work

Aari on net sleeves or yokes for a lighter, modern look.

How to choose

  • Match the saree. A heavy saree border pairs well with simpler blouse work. A plain saree can carry a more worked blouse.
  • Think about the occasion. Keep it light for office and family functions, and go fuller for weddings and receptions.
  • Pick thread colours from the saree. Taking two or three colours from the border keeps the look tied together.
  • Decide where people will look. For a wedding, the back neck is seen in photos as much as the front.
  • Allow time. Aari work is done by hand, so heavier designs take longer. Share your occasion date early.

Questions about aari work blouses

What is aari work?

Aari work is hand embroidery done with a fine hooked needle on fabric stretched over a frame. It is used for thread, zari, bead, sequin and stone work on blouses.

Is aari work the same as maggam work?

They are closely related. Maggam is the name commonly used in Andhra and Telangana for the same frame-and-hook embroidery.

Which aari design suits a silk saree?

If the silk saree has a wide zari border, choose lighter aari work on the neck and sleeves in colours from the border. A plain silk saree can take a fuller design.
